Govt supports wheat marketing review

WASHINGTON–The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is preparing for a “no-vote” on new wheat seed laws, arguing in a statement yesterday that “the federal government should not stand between farmers and their product.”

Farmers and wheat seed companies have fought in court against the mandatory labeling of genetically modified seed by the USDA in a two-year-old bill being considered by Congress. The bill would require the labeling of genetically modified foods before they can be sold. The Federal Trade Commission has indicated that state agri-food regulations are generally sufficient to address any food safety issues. The USDA’s proposal simply ignores this. The USDA is attempting to set an industry precedent that would threaten millions of Americans’ health and well-being, and in doing so it is harming thousands of small farmers and small businesses in the process. As we continue to work together with agriculture partners on food safety, we are committed to standing with our farmers and ranchers to protect their livelihoods.”

The industry is expected to lobby Congress to reject the proposal. “We are disappointed that federal authorities would allow farmers and ranchers, with only two months to protect their health, to remain caught off-guard while the res
